The location of Echo Canyon gains its name from the spacious canyon situated north of the Arkansas River, seen from this location along the river. This canyon was created by an ancient volcano that literally "blew it's top!" creating a Caldera: A Caldera is a collapse that is triggered by the emptying of the magma chamber beneath the volcano, typically the result of a large volcanic eruption.

The Caldera is currently known as Table Mountain which stretches east to west from Parkdale of the Arkansas River near the Royal Gorge Valley Ranch about 30 miles to the Texas Creek region of the Arkansas River.
